Concept Design for Air-to-Water Heat Pump Plant to Resolve Flue Gas Entrainment
This project involved developing 100% concept-level design documents for the full electrification of LBNL's Building 84. The primary objective was to eliminate the health and safety risk of boiler exhaust gas re-entrainment by replacing the existing gas-fired heating plant. The proposed design specified a rooftop air-to-water heat pump plant to serve the building's significant heating loads, with provisions for future chilled water generation. The scope also included replacing the gas-fired domestic and industrial water heaters with dedicated electric heat pump systems, providing a complete technical basis for a future design-build implementation.
