Santa Cruz Downtown Library Mixed Use
A Library That Breathes: High-Performance Systems for a Civic Hub
In this state-of-the-art project, we designed the all-electric MEP systems for the new two-story Santa Cruz Downtown Library, which is targeting LEED Platinum. The all-electric HVAC system is served by a central 4-pipe air-to-water heat pump providing simultaneous heating and cooling to hydronic loops. A key design strategy was to decouple the high solar load of the west-facing facade using perimeter fan coil units, which allows the central air handlers to efficiently serve interior zones via a low-velocity displacement ventilation system. The design is further optimized with radiant ceiling panels on the mezzanine and a control sequence that integrates automated operable windows for passive cooling and ventilation.
